Industrial water supply treatment includes several procedures, and generally, technical treatment procedures such as electrodialysis, reversed dialysis and ion exchanging etc, are its main procedures. To ensure these main procedures carried through safely, highly efficiently and economically, the original water shall be treated in order to obtain the quality targets of incoming water allowed for water treatment equipments. In engineering, we always call water purification, prophase softening or confection as water quality prophase treatment, in short, prophase treatment. Objects of prophase treatment are harmful substances to subsequent treatment equipments such as mechanical impurities of suspended materials, viscous and glue particles etc, as well as colloids, silicon dioxides, microorganism, organic substances and activated chlorines etc. The effect of prophase treatment directly affects technical and economic effect and long-term safe operation of main procedures such as electrodialysis, reversed dialysis and ion exchanging etc, and it is an important interlink in industrial water supply treatment.

In general, water hardness is rated according to its total concentration of calcium ion and magnesium ion in water. It is defined that 10mg of equivalent CaO in one liter of water is 1 hardness-degree, i.e. concentration of CaO in water is 10ppm. If water hardness is less than 8 degree, water is called soft water, otherwise called hard water.

It is specified by State that hardness of potable water shall be no more than 25 degree. Hardness of water used in beverage and brewing industry shall be less than 3~4 degree. Otherwise minerals in water would deposit on surface of equipment and affect products quality.
