cummins list as follows:
The principal function of the piston rings is to form a seal between the combustion chamber and the crankcase of the engine. The goal is to prevent combustion gases from passing into the crankcase and oil from passing into the combustion chamber. During the compression and power strokes, the compression ring seals the combustion gases and prevents blow-by. Although blow-by is not completely eliminated it is kept to an acceptable limit. During the compression and exhaust strokes the cylinder walls are lubricated with oil by throw off from the connecting rod bearings. Excess oil is wiped off by the piston rings. Not only does the oil ring have the responsibility of wiping the excess oil off the cylinder walls, but the job is also shared by all of the rings, leaving a fine layer of oil on the wall to provide lubrication for the following ring. As rings wear, the ability to perform these functions is decreased resulting in oil consumption and blow-by. When this happens it is time for a new set of rings.
Technologies as follows:
Compression Rings
JPPR offers a wide range of ring materials, technical designs and running face coatings to suit any piston ring application. profile optimized (FO) rings provide maximum protection against oil consumption and blowby for today’s highly loaded, clean-burning engines.
In addition, JPPR has developed innovative coatings and treatments, such as CKS (chromium-ceramics coating) and GDC (chromium-diamond coating), both of which reduce wear and improve scuff resistance under arduous conditions. Other innovative coatings include HVOF (high-velocity oxygen fuel) and PVD (physical-vapor-deposition).
We offer a variety of high-quality cast iron and steel materials. This extensive spectrum ranges from gray cast iron and heat-treated alloyed gray cast iron to speroidal graphite cast iron. It also includes high-alloyed steel with up to 17 percent chromium content for nitrocarburizing treatments. All materials have been specially developed by JPPR to attain the highest level of functionality and to fulfill customer expectations.
In order to meet tomorrow’s demand for increased ring-side face protection against rising cylinder pressures and increasingly stringent emission requirements, JPPR has introduced Blitzchrome® side face protection. This innovative coating provides an extremely wear-resistant Chromium surface that can be applied to the ring-side flanks.
JPPR is committed to consistently improving existing materials and developing new materials to meet our customers’ needs.
Scraper Rings
Much like upper compression rings, JPPR'S scraper rings are available with a comprehensive range of materials, technical designs and running face coatings. FO scraper rings also provide maximum protection against oil consumption and blowby. Semi-inlaid type running faces utilize a sharp lower edge that’s optimal for oil control. Napier and interrupted Napier designs provide additional options for scraper ring oil control. Oil scraping effect can be increased with the addition of a “step” or twist feature.
Oil-Control Rings
JPPR two-piece oil-control rings are available in a variety of design variations. They include cast iron or nitrided profile steel bodies; standard, beveled or tapered ring lands; high-wear-resistance chrome, CKS or GDC coatings; and slotted or drilled drainage systems.
Compression Rings
Compression rings are used in light-vehicle gasoline, light-vehicle diesel and heavy-duty/truck diesel engines. The main functions of compression rings are to seal the combustion chamber from the crankcase and transfer heat from the piston to the cylinder. However, they also play an important part in controlling engine oil consumption.
Scraper Rings
Various scraper rings are used in light-vehicle gasoline, and light-vehicle and truck diesel engines. They are occasionally used in the compressors of commercial vehicle air-brake systems. Scraper rings assist the upper compression ring in sealing the combustion chamber from the crankcase. Scraper rings scrape, control and store oil, which is between the upper compression ring and the scraper ring.
Oil-Control Rings
Oil-control rings are used in light-vehicle gasoline engines (two- or three-piece), light-vehicle diesel engines (two-piece), and truck diesel engines (two-piece). The main function of the rings in the bottom piston groove is to scrape oil from the cylinder wall, meaning oil-control rings play a major part in regulating an engine’s oil consumption.
Compression Rings
Gray cast iron and steel piston rings are manufactured in different processes. At JPPR, gray iron piston rings are cast as individual rings in a noncircular shape. The rings are generally machined to the required shape by means of double-cam turning, a process in which the ring blank, already axially ground, is copy-turned simultaneously on the inside and outside diameters.
Steel piston rings are made from a profiled wire. The rings are coiled into a circular shape, then the gap is cut out. The necessary shape is obtained using a heat-treatment process in which the rings are mounted onto an arbor appropriately designed to impart the required radial pressure distribution.
Scraper Rings
The ring step is produced in a rectangular or undercut (Napier) design. The advantage of the undercut step is that when the ring twists, a sharp downward scraping edge will still be available to conduct the oil quickly from the ring’s outer edge into the step’s reservoir. This prevents oil from gathering at the scraping edge and diminishing the scraping effect.
Oil-Control Rings
JPPR commonly produces five different types of two-piece oil-control ring bodies. Variations on ring land geometry and running face coating give many options for oil consumption and wear performance.
Three fundamental expander-spacer styles have been established for oil-control rings on the world market. When made from a nitridable steel, nitriding can provide effective protection against secondary wear.
