How the rotary cooler work
The direct air swept rotary cooler design consists of a rotating cylinder with internal flighting. This cooler design brings hot product into direct contact with the cooling medium, in a countercurrent flow configuration. The cooling medium may be ambient air, cooled air or special gases.
Rotary cooler application
The technology is particularly suited for applications involving cooling hot materials from 700ºC to 5-10ºC of the ambient air temperature. Specialized cooler designs handling high temperature products to 1600ºC can also be provided.
The hot process material is introduced into one end of a rotating cylinder where it is lifted on flights secured to the ID of the cylinder and showered through the cooling air stream. The air passes though the cylinder countercurrent to the material, thus providing the most efficient heat transfer and coolest product temperature. In special cases, the air for cooling can be refrigerated to remove moisture from the air or to cool the product below ambient temperature.
useage
If the material to be cooled is at an extremely high temperature, the feed end of the cooler can be refractory lined or fabricated from high temperature alloys. Used in series with a direct fired rotary dryer or rotary kiln, the hot air leaving the cooler can serve as preheated secondary combustion air, the resulting in reduced fuel usage.
