General Description- The Hydraulic Splitter works on the principle of wedge effect. The wedges of splitter are inserted in predrilled hole and out of the three wedges the center taper wedge is forced between the two counter wedges by hydraulic pressure forcing them apart. The pressure is transferred to the walls of the rock developing a crack and split further.
- Drilling
The primary operation while using Hydraulic Splitter is drilling a hole in the material to be demolished. This easier by the conventional method of pneumatic drilling with compressor & jackhammer (Drill rod of 800mm length and cross bit Dia. of 32-50mm.) The hole diameter should not be less than 32 mm and the depth less than 45cm. The holes should always be straight (Wedges are subjected to undue stresses due to a zigzag hole). The quantity of holes depends upon the rock strata and quality. The distance between two holes is also usually maintained between 12-18" and about 8-10" from tableside again depending on the quality of the rock..
- Splitting
After the drilling operation the splitter wedges (two counter wedges and one center wedge) are inserted in the hole. The control lever sets the forward and reverse stroke of the wedge movement. The hydraulic pressure pushes the center wedge forcing the two counter wedges to fly outwards, exerting pressure and splitting the material.
