Loading and Unloading System LU
Loading and Unloading systems, also called LU is a automatic method to load and unload Freeze dryers with Vials. The processes and sub-processes described in the following chapters. The proven design methods described in the following sections have resulted in an extremely reliable unit with exceptional safety and ease of service and installation. The design, first class components and the highest manufacturing quality ensures the performance of the unit. LU can be equipped with options to satisfy specific process conditions and functionality.
General Information
The automatic loading and unloading system of the freeze dryer is installed in an isolator. This system is designed for:
Automatic transfer of vials from the filling line to the load/unload system (LU)
Automatic loading/unloading the freeze dryer with vials
Automatic transfer of lyophilized vials to the capping machine
To achieve exact positioning of the LU. This can be adjusted mechanically in the height to position and fix the system in front of the Freeze dryers.
The isolator system is not scope of supply.
Mechanical Description
Filled vials with loose sitting rubber stoppers provided from the filling line to the formatting table (FT) via the conveyor belt are individually counted. The conveyors are provided with lateral guides, that can be continuously adjusted for different vial sizes. Also the turntables are provided with pluggable format parts for different vial sizes. For detailed informations about the vial sizes to handle by the LU. The transport performance is from 90 up to 400 vials /minute. Each conveyor and turntable have a separate electric drive which is continuously adjustable, to optimize the transfer of the vials.
The vial stopper moves forward to catch the next coming vials when the preset number of vials per row is reached. Fallen vials will be mechanically rejected. The guide bar of the formatting area moves down. This guide bar act as a guiding rail for the inlet of the vials. Then the row of vials is pushed onto the formatting table, where an optimal formation of vials will be built.
The pusher will be moved back to his basic position and the guide bar is lifted again. The shifting bolt (”Vial-Shifter“) at the end of the formatting conveyor belt is actuated and will be automatically displaced by half of the diameter of a vial, into a new guiding position, to assure an optimal utilization of the available loading space on the shelf of the freeze dryer. This process is achieving a compact collection of the vial package

The major function of formatting unit is to format the vials into rows and push them row by row until one- shelf batch is reached
Push/Pull Bar
When the one-shelf batch was ready, the push bar will move forward in front of the vials and push them inside the freeze dryer chamber. After drying process, the pull bar moves to the end of the chamber, fall down and pull the batch out.
LAF and RABS
The whole system is under the protection from LAF and RABS system, the laminar flow rate is 0.45 m/s ± 20% (90 ± 18 fpm).
CONTROL SYSTEM
Our control system controls and visualizes the functions and processes of the LU. The drives and components are switched on and off automatically in accordance with the requirements of the process and all functions are monitored.
