Electric arc furnace

Anelectricarcfurnace (EAF) is afurnace thatheatscharged material bymeansof anelectric arc.

Arc furnacesrangeinsizefromsmallunitsofapproximatelyoneton capacity (usedinfoundries forproducingcast iron products) up to about 400 tonunitsusedforsecondarysteelmaking. Arc furnaces usedinresearchlaboratoriesandbydentists may have a capacity of onlyafewdozengrams.Electricarcfurnacetemperatures can beupto1,800degreesCelsius.Arcfurnacesdiffer frominduction furnaces inthatthechargematerialis directly exposed to the electricarc,and thecurrentinthefurnace terminals passesthroughthechargedmaterial.
