Electric arc furnace

An electric arcfurnace (EAF) is afurnace that heats charged material by meansof anelectric arc.

Arc furnaces range in size from small units of approximately oneton capacity (used infoundries for producingcast iron products) up to about 400 ton units used forsecondarysteelmaking. Arc furnaces used in research laboratories and bydentists may have a capacity of only a few dozen grams. Electric arc furnace temperatures can be up to 1,800 degreesCelsius. Arc furnaces differ frominduction furnaces in thatthe chargematerial is directly exposed to the electric arc, and the currentin the furnace terminals passes through the charged material.
