Belt filter press, also known as the belt pressure filter press, is a kind of equipment which dewaters the slurry utilizing squeezing action between the two endless belts which winding in a series of rollers with different diameter. Belt filter press has the advantages of simple structure, high dewatering efficiency, large treatment capacity, small energy consumption, low noise, high degree of automation, continuous operation, easy maintenance, etc, its costs and operation costs are more than 30% lower than the plate and frame filter press, so it become the first choice of the urban sewage treatment equipment. Belt type filter is mainly used in papermaking, dyeing, pharmaceutical, mining, steel, coal, leather and other industries, especially widely used in the urban sewage treatment and industrial sludge dewatering.

Belt type filter working principle generally include four stages:
- Preprocessing stage,Generally the solids content of the raw slurry is very low. And we must raise the concentration of slurry by utilizing the gravity settling or other ways in order to reduce processing costs.
- Gravity dewatering stage, the sludge after flocculation pretreatment was fed to the belt, under the action of gravity, the water outside of the floccules will be filtered out through the filter cloth, and to reduce the water content of sludge.
- Wedge preloading dewatering stage, after gravity dewatering filter, the sludge begins to be sent into the wedge pressing section, the space to be narrowing, and belt to impose extruding and shearing action on sludge and to dewater the sludge again. After this stage, the liquidity of sludge almost completely get removed , thus ensures sludge in squeezing dewatering section will not be squeezed out under normal conditions.
- Press dewater stage, the sludge will be pressed and sheared repeatedly by a series of rollers, a lot of capillary water be expelled, the moisture content be reduced gradually, and then filter cake be formed. Filter cake was unloaded by scraper in the point of belt separating. And the filter cloth gets into the next cycle after discharging and cleaning.
